PNG to DXF Converter

Trace a PNG into closed outlines and save it as a DXF that AutoCAD, Fusion 360, FreeCAD, LibreCAD, LightBurn and most CAM programs can open.

PNG to DXF is a tracing job

DXF stores lines and curves, not pixels. Some converters only outline the pixel grid, which gives you thousands of tiny stair steps or a file your machine refuses to cut. VectorMaker traces the shapes in your PNG first, smooths the edges into curves, and then writes each outline as a closed polyline. That is the geometry a laser, plasma cutter, router or drag knife can actually follow.

PNG is a good starting format for this. It is lossless, so edges are clean, and transparent backgrounds are ignored automatically.

How to convert PNG to DXF

  1. Drop the PNG above. The Line art preset is selected. It gives one solid layer, which suits part outlines, logos for cutting, decals and signs.
  2. Tune Threshold until shapes are solid and thin parts stay connected.
  3. Lower Detail if you see loose dots. Every dot would become a tiny closed shape in the DXF.
  4. Set Output width in millimeters. The DXF is written in millimeters, so a 200 mm setting imports as 200 mm.
  5. Click Download DXF (Pro). On the free plan, download the SVG and use the free route below.

What is inside the DXF

  • Version: DXF R12 (AC1009), the most widely readable flavor of DXF.
  • Entities: closed POLYLINE outlines. Holes, such as the inside of a letter O, are separate closed outlines.
  • Units: millimeters. Curves are flattened into short straight segments about 0.15 mm apart at your output size.
  • Layers: Line art puts everything on one layer named CUT. In color mode each color gets its own layer, named COLOR_ followed by its hex code, which makes it easy to map colors to cut, score and engrave settings.

Opening the DXF in common software

  • AutoCAD, DraftSight, LibreCAD, QCAD: open the file directly. If the drawing looks tiny or huge, check that the drawing units are millimeters.
  • Fusion 360: use Insert DXF and pick a plane. Closed polylines become profiles you can extrude or cut.
  • FreeCAD: use File, Import and choose the DXF.
  • LightBurn, RDWorks, LaserGRBL: import the DXF and choose millimeters if the software asks for units.
  • Carbide Create and VCarve: import the DXF and confirm that vectors are closed before you create toolpaths.

The free route: SVG first, DXF in Inkscape

Direct DXF export is a Pro feature. If you only need a single file today, download the free SVG and open it in Inkscape, which is free. Choose Save As and pick AutoCAD DXF R12 or Desktop Cutting Plotter (DXF R14). Also check whether you need DXF at all: LightBurn, LaserGRBL, xTool Creative Space and many CAM programs accept SVG directly.

Honest limits

The DXF follows the edges of your artwork. A drawn line becomes a thin closed shape with two edges, not a single centerline, and the trace knows nothing about dimensions or tolerances. For precise mechanical parts, use the traced outline as a reference layer and redraw the critical features in CAD. Kerf and tool offsets belong in your CAM or laser software, not in the drawing. Frequently asked questions

How do I convert PNG to DXF for free?

Download the free SVG from this page, open it in Inkscape and save it as DXF. With Pro you can export DXF directly, including whole batches.

Which DXF version does it create?

DXF R12 (AC1009) with closed POLYLINE entities in millimeters.

Can I convert a PNG to DXF for AutoCAD?

Yes. AutoCAD opens R12 DXF files. If the scale looks wrong, set the drawing units to millimeters.

Will a line drawing become single lines?

No. The tracer outlines shapes, so each drawn line becomes a thin closed outline with two edges. That works for cutting and engraving, but not for single-line plotting.

Does a transparent PNG background end up in the DXF?

No. Transparent and white areas are ignored, so only the artwork is traced.
