Why a JPG needs extra care
JPEG is a lossy format. Around every edge it leaves faint blocks and color noise, and phone photos add uneven light and paper texture on top. If you trace that directly, you get ragged outlines and hundreds of specks, and each speck becomes a tiny closed shape in the DXF. The Line art preset on this page uses an automatic threshold that separates ink from paper, and the Detail slider removes small specks before anything is written to the file.
How to convert a JPG to DXF
- Prepare the photo. Shoot straight on, in even light, with the drawing filling most of the frame. Crop away the table and shadows if you can.
- Drop the JPG above. Line art is selected and Threshold starts on Auto.
- Adjust Threshold. Move it right if lines break apart, and left if gray paper texture turns black.
- Lower Detail until stray dots disappear from the preview.
- Set Output width in millimeters, then click Download DXF (Pro) or download the free SVG.
Good and bad JPGs for DXF
- Works well: logos, clip art, silhouettes, stencil designs, signs and ink drawings on white paper.
- Works with some effort: pencil sketches (try the Sketch preset), printed diagrams and small web images.
- Does not work well: full color photos of people or scenes. You get posterized blobs, not a cuttable design. Turn the photo into a high-contrast silhouette first, or use the Pro single-color cut file mode to merge everything into one shape.
Scanned drawings and paper templates
A common job is turning a paper template, a woodworking or sewing pattern, or a hand drawn part into a DXF. If you have a scanner, scan at 300 dpi instead of taking a photo, because a scanner keeps the scale consistent across the page and avoids perspective distortion. Measure the real width of the area you scanned and type it into Output width, so the DXF comes out at true size. Keep in mind that this is an outline trace: drawn lines become thin closed shapes, and dimensions are only as accurate as the scan.
What you get in the DXF
- DXF R12 (AC1009) with closed POLYLINE outlines, the most compatible flavor of DXF.
- Millimeter units, with curves flattened into segments about 0.15 mm apart at your output size.
- One layer named CUT in Line art mode, or one layer per color in color mode.
- Opens in AutoCAD, Fusion 360, FreeCAD, LibreCAD, LightBurn, RDWorks, LaserGRBL, Carbide Create and VCarve.
Free and Pro
Tracing and SVG download are free for single images up to 2 megapixels. DXF export, batch conversion into one ZIP, and inputs up to 16 megapixels are part of Pro. If you only need one DXF, open the free SVG in Inkscape and save it as DXF. Either way, your JPG never leaves your computer. If your file is a PNG, the PNG to DXF page covers transparent backgrounds and CAD imports in more detail.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert JPG to DXF for free?
Yes. Download the free SVG, then save it as DXF in Inkscape. Direct DXF export is part of Pro.
Why does my DXF have hundreds of small shapes?
JPEG noise and paper texture were traced as shapes. Lower Detail, adjust Threshold, and crop the photo tighter before converting.
Can I convert a photo of a person to DXF?
You can, but the result is posterized shapes, not a cuttable portrait. For cutting, make a high-contrast silhouette first or use the Pro single-color cut file mode.
Will the DXF have the right size?
The DXF uses millimeters. Set Output width to the real width you want before exporting, and it imports at that size.
What JPG resolution works best?
At least 1000 pixels across. Free conversions are scaled to 2 megapixels, and Pro accepts up to 16 megapixels.
